Lesson Info

We offer music production and recording lessons for all levels, ages 10 and up. Whether you are a complete beginner, an intermediate producer or an advanced home studio owner looking to go pro, we can help you take your recording and production skills to the next level.

Our instructors are professional musicians, producers and recording engineers who work with bands, singer-songwriters and instrumentalists all over the Bay Area. Our lessons are tailored to your unique goals, musical taste and the amount of time you have to practice every week. We are fluent in music theory and have tons of experience in creating a personalized music production curriculum that will take you where you want to go.

Music production lessons take place at our newly renovated studios in Lafayette, CA right off the freeway. We have a private parking lot, and street parking is plentiful. We are less than a mile away from Lafayette BART, and the way over is perfect for walking or cycling.

Prefer remote video lessons? We do those too! Just check the “Online Lesson” option when scheduling and you will receive login instructions via email. Video lessons are conducted over a virtual classroom, where both you and your instructor can display your screens and explore a variety of production tools and methods.

If you are new to recording and producing music, this is the perfect place to start. Here is where music and technology meet, ideas turn into reality, and stories come to life. We will start by going over your recoding setup and getting familiar with your DAW. We will make sure that your equipment is plugged in correctly, walk you through the settings and features of your gear and software and discuss some basic production concepts and methods. By the end of your first lesson you will be ready to record some tracks and producing music!

A great production starts with great music. Learn how to arrange, as well as structure a song in a variety of genres. We will layer parts and instruments, discuss how to make better musical choices and harness your existing musical knowledge to craft a tighter musical composition. More personalized production lessons are also available, with the option of using a personal song or project to learn professional production methods.

Get to know the ins and outs of the DAW of your choice. We teach Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live and GarageBand. We are also fluent in Universal Audio’s Apollo environment and can help recommend third party plug-ins, synths, samples, loops, etc. If you feel strongly about using another DAW, that’s cool too. We can still help take your productions to the next level.

Learn the timeless recording and production techniques that were used to make your favorite albums. We will discuss microphone choice and placements, polar patterns, phasing, EQ and dynamics, using distortion and saturation, comping, doubling and more. We will discuss how to capture the sound different instruments and how to arrange the recorded tracks in your DAW.

Master modern production techniques such as beat-making, synthesis, sound design and sampling. We will learn to work out of templates, chop up drum breaks, find samples that support your track, use the groove pool, sample and warp audio and create your own original beats and sounds. We will discuss how to use equalization, compression, and basic mixing tools to take your productions to the next level.

We are the highest rated music studio in the Bay Area and maintain a 5-star rating on Yelp, Facebook, Google and Thumbtack. Check out what our students have to say about their experience at ModernTone.

While the studios are open every day of the week, we can’t all be there all the time. However, most of us are available for lessons on multiple days throughout the week. Our quick online booking process matches your schedule with your instructor’s availability and helps you find the best day and time for your lesson. Want to reserve that day and time every week? Click the “recurring” tab after choosing a day and time. Prefer to book a different date every time? Be our guest. You can even book multiple lessons in advance, each at a different day and time.

Your instrument, a notebook, and a will to rock and roll! A list of songs you like is also a great idea.

We sure can! Introducing you to new ideas, techniques, methods, scales and musical concepts, will help you break out of your rut and regain your long lost enthusiasm. In addition to that, we will make sure you improve gradually from week to week and help you establish a proper practicing regimen. We’ll teach you how to be meticulous about your playing and maybe even show you a secret trick or two ;)

You can definitely borrow, just make sure that you are free to keep it for a while because you will need it to practice at home between lessons. However, in the long run, it’s probably best to own your instrument.

Monthly Lesson Plans

Our monthly lesson plans are designed for committed students who take lessons regularly and would like to reserve the same day and time with their favorite instructor. Missed a lesson? Couldn’t make it this month? No worries! Your unused lessons roll-over from month to month so you will never be charged for lessons that you did not attend (just don’t forget to let us know 48 hours in advance).
