Bio

Hi there, my name is Jacob Light, and music has been my life for as long as I can remember. I’m a record producer, audio engineer, session musician, and studio owner based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I’ve been playing, writing, performing, producing, and recording music with bands and solo artists on stage and in the studio for over 25 years. I’ve been credited on hundreds of commercial recordings and have been fortunate enough to collaborate with some of the finest people in the music industry.

As a music producer, I’m all about versatility, detail, and substance. I work with indie artists, bands, and record labels to create exciting records that resonate with music fans and bring out the best in both the songs and the performers. My music credits include rock, punk, blues, country, folk, and pop artists like Tess & The Details (Double Helix Records), Briget Boyle (Waxsimile Productions), Michael Murphy (MPM Records), Tom Rican, Kat Van Morgan, Ava Toton, Eudora Rose, and many more.

Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, music has always been my thing. I started playing at age 11, training under some of the best instructors in the country, including professors and graduates of the Jerusalem Academy of Music, Berklee College of Music, and Rimon School of Music to name a few. I’m a classically-trained guitarist, multi-instrumentalist composer, and utility session musician versed in a wide variety of musical styles.

Through my teens and 20’s, I diligently worked my way up to becoming a full-time working musician. I wrote my first song at the age of 12, started my first band at 13, and spent the next two decades on stage, racking up more than 1,200 live shows by my early 30’s.

As a musician and band member I’ve collaborated with producers like John Naclerio (My Chemical Romance, American Authors) and Yotam Ben Horin (Useless ID). I’ve performed and recorded with Kill The Drive (Broken English Records), Hagveret Harishona, Gal De-Paz, Stanga (NMC Music), Yirmi Kaplan, and a ton more.

After years of performing, recording, and working in studios around the world, I created ModernTone Studios, where my team and I help musicians of all levels achieve their goals. We marry major label production with indie heart and soul to create high-quality recordings that capture your unique sound and style. Whether you’re a solo artist or part of a band, we’d love to work with you on your next project and bring your music to life.

As a music producer, I’ve had the privilege of working with an array of artists, from established acts to up-and-coming indie musicians. I approach each project with enthusiasm and an open mind, eager to learn about each artist’s unique voice, style, and vision. My production philosophy revolves around the belief that music should connect with its audience on a deep emotional level. That’s why I’m committed to bringing out the best in every artist I work with, honing their sound to create powerful, authentic, and inspiring records.

I pride myself on being versatile and believe that great songs can be made in any genre. From pop to punk, blues to folk, I love telling stories through music. I understand that every project is unique, and I always strive to tailor my approach to meet the needs of every artist or band. Whether you’re recording your first EP or your fourth full-length album, I’ll work closely with you to understand your goals and vision, and then use my expertise and creative skills to help you achieve them.

As an audio engineer, I combine classic recording techniques with modern tools and workflows to capture the best possible sound and performance for each project. I’m all about crafting the perfect tone on the day of the recording, rather than relying on fixing issues later in the mix. For me, recording is an art form and I approach it as such – from choosing the right preamp to creating rich-sounding combinations of effects and outboard gear.

When it comes to studio work, I have a meticulous approach and ensure every detail is just right. From mic placement to editing and mixing, I’m committed to delivering recordings that are polished and professional. Whether we’re tracking live instruments, programming electronic elements, or layering vocal harmonies, I’m always striving for the perfect balance and tone. I work with artists and bands of all genres, providing them with the tools and expertise they need to create great sounding records.

As an arranger and songwriter, my goal is to elevate your music. I have years of experience crafting memorable melodies, writing powerful lyrics, and arranging songs in a way that brings out the best in each composition. Whether you’re a singer-songwriter developing your material or a band looking to refine your sound, I can help you achieve your musical goals.

I have a deep understanding of musical theory and can help you develop complex harmonies, unique chord progressions, and memorable hooks. I’m also skilled at arranging music for live performance, whether you need a stripped-down acoustic version of your song or a full orchestration. We’ll work together to make sure your music stands out in a crowded market and connect with audiences on a deep emotional level.

As a session musician, I’ve played on countless recordings across a wide range of genres. Whether you’re looking for a killer guitar solo, a driving bass line, or a captivating synth part, I can deliver a polished, original performance that seamlessly complements your music. I specialize in crafting unique musical parts that blend beautifully with one another, infusing an extra layer of depth and creativity to your tracks. From laying down a solid rhythm foundation to crafting intricate counter melodies and playing catchy instrumental hooks, I deliver the perfect finishing touches to any project.

In my experience, the key to excellent session work is having a keen ear for the artist’s vision and the ability to quickly adapt on the spot. I pride myself on being an attentive listener, and I’m more than willing to try out multiple approaches until the part sounds exactly like what you envisioned. I’m a strong believer in creating an atmosphere of openness and collaboration, where the musicians I work with feel comfortable expressing their ideas and suggestions. This approach, coupled with the highest quality of work, ensures that my clients leave every session with a smile on their face.

As the Musical Director at ModernTone, my goal is to inspire and nurture our artists, students, and incredible team of instructors, producers, and session musicians.I create personalized artist development plans that encompass a mix of lessons, songwriting sessions, recording projects, and one-on-one coaching. It’s like a musical adventure where we embark together to unlock your full potential.

With a collaborative spirit, I work closely with my talented team to elevate their music game and make sure each and every one of our clients and students is on the path to success. I also develop original lesson plans and materials that help students break down complex musical concepts. My team and I are all about pushing boundaries and constantly refining our methods to ensure you’re getting the best musical experience out there.

In addition to my studio work, I’m also a dedicated music educator. I believe that music is one of the most powerful forms of self-expression and creativity, and I’m passionate about helping others discover the joy of playing, recording, and creating music.

As a music educator, I teach masterclasses in guitar, music theory, composition, music production, and audio engineering. I specialize in working with advanced players, producers, engineers, and aspiring professional musicians. I help them hone their skills and coach them in pursuing a career in the music industry. I focus on building a strong foundation of technique and theory while also encouraging creativity, individuality, and self-expression, so that each student can develop their own unique voice.
