Bio

Annie Cilley is a professional vocalist, composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist with experience in a broad range of genres including classical, jazz, musical theater, americana, pop/electronic, and eastern European folk music. She self-produced her debut EP of original songs, Three Songs, in 2016 and is currently working on her second release. She graduated with a BA in music composition and production from Mills College in Oakland, CA and was awarded the Donna Peterson Vocal Prize for her performance of three new original songs at her thesis concert.

She got her start at the age of 8, playing her sister’s hand-me-down alto saxophone in school band and throughout her education played in symphonic and marching band, sang in symphonic and jazz choir, participated in musical theater, took piano and voice lessons, and began to play guitar and write songs.

Since 2011 she has playing venues and touring with Sonoma County local favorites including The Crux, Church Marching Band, Oddjob Ensemble, and Plectrum Ensemble as a saxophonist, violinist, and vocalist. Since moving to Oakland in 2014, in addition to earning a music degree and producing her debut EP, Annie has lead her own jazz band as a vocalist, played as a violinist and saxophonist in various ensembles, and performed her original music as part of the music-theater collaboration The Living Odyssey.

As an instructor, Annie values addressing the individual needs of a student and tailoring her lessons to meet those needs. She began as a elementary school tutor and mentor for Americorps, moved on to freelance work with high school students, and eventually began providing music theory and songwriting lessons for adults.

“Delivering a song is like telling a story”

Annie Cilley has been singing forever. She considers her voice to be her main musical instrument, which says a lot considering this multi-instrumentalist can play the violin, the saxophone, and the piano. “Singing allows me to express otherwise inexpressible emotions”, she explains.
